Representative Joe Wilson, a Republican from South Carolina, was hospitalized on Tuesday, according to a post on his official social media account. The post confirmed that Mr. Wilson experienced a medical emergency and is currently being evaluated at a hospital in Washington, D.C.
His son, Alan Wilson, who is also the attorney general of South Carolina, later shared that his father had experienced "stroke-like symptoms." He mentioned speaking with his mother, who was at the hospital, and said he was grateful that his father is stable and under medical observation.
Mr. Wilson, 77, is currently running for re-election against Democratic candidate David Robinson to represent a conservative district in central South Carolina. He first gained national attention in 2009 when he shouted "you lie" at President Barack Obama during a joint session of Congress, an action that was widely criticized. Since then, he has served as a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, as well as on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
